Bunnies & Burrows

This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we chat about a game about playing rabbits: Bunnies & Burrows! This 1976 RPG is surprising for the time period and offered up a ton of innovation for RPG design, including the first skill system and first martial arts system. Bunnies are surprising critters!

  1. Great episode. I tracked down the original edition a while ago (I think – pale blue) and also love the fact that rabbits was the genre they reached for when the field (yeah…) was so wide open. Pirates? Spies? Superheroes? No, rabbits. I seem to remember it being talked about in another podcast along the lines of the original authors being somehow animal behavioural scientists (that must be a thing).

But there is something in the idea that you are playing things vulnerable to what are, to humans, common or garden critters. I think the difficulty might be that playing essentially dumb animals makes certain decisions/actions unrealistic. You know how a book of matches works but a rabbit?

    1. What you describe definitely applies to the more recent rabbit RPG, The Warren, but I still don’t know how exactly you’re supposed to approach the rabbits of Bunnies & Burrows, since they can be herbalists and trap makers, you know? – Stu
