Demons II (1993)

The first Demons box introduces the demon lords and their realm. The Demons II box set (1993) tells you what to do with them. You might argue that should have been in the first box set too, and I might agree with you.

Anyway, this is, to my knowledge, the first time comic artist Glenn Fabry’s work appears on an RPG. You probably know him best from his covers on Garth Ennis’ Preacher, but before that, he did a large number of covers for Ennis’ run on Hellblazer. If you’re familiar with that work, it makes him a pretty inspired choice for the Demons line.

Inside the box, the gamemaster’s book is devoted to what demons do, how the interface with the world, details on a number of cults, some more spells, another character class and more. This stuff feels overall more useful than what we got in the first box and had a more measured tone, I think. Maybe its just Joe DeVelasco’s art, classing up the joint (you might be familiar with him from Mayfair’s Chill RPG).

There is also another in-universe demon-hunting handbook and a notebook (tied with a ribbon!) that details the devil-worshipping Cabal. And two linked adventures. The first is stop the demons from getting the magic sword. The second is stop the disguised demons from starting a civil war. Neither subtle nor heady stuff, TBH.

TSR’s 1991 lawsuit claimed that Mayfair had violated the terms of the 1984 agreement, which they had, gently, here and there. In 1993, the judge generally sided with Mayfair though, ruling that they correct the breaches when the books were reprinted.
